Company complies with Data Protection Act shock horror

My Google Alerts today throw up a story about a software house that has registerd withthe Information Commissioner as a data controller. Their PR people evidently thought this was something that merited a press release. I suppose they could have been operating within the core business purposes exemption up to now - but if everyone in the world had their publicity people put out press releases every time they complied with a mundane legal obligation, can you imagine how much Internet traffic that would create?

No, I'm not going to mention any names. Nor am I goiong to be specific about another story that came up, on a councillor's blog, observing that the authority of which he is a member hadn't updated its register entry since it became a unitary authority. I wondered (in a comment on his blog) whether he had a duty to report criminal activity by the council, and it will be interesting - perhaps - to see what he says!
