The 1709 Blog: When claimants stand up for copyright, defendants can get sent down: the sad story of a Mr Fletcher, who (reminding me of his namesake in the Ronnie Barker TV show, Porridge) ended up being sentenced to 28 days' imprisonment, suspended for a year, after displaying considerable reluctance to pay for the music he played in his nightclub. PPL, the relevant licensing body, seems to have been fairly generous in allowing him time to pay, but the summary of the case (which is only available to Lawtel subscribers, being an ex tempore judgment by Arnold J) shows that he allowed ever opportunity to slip through his fingers.
